MSU SCREENWRITING AND ANIMATION PROGRAM

HOSTS

ROGER GUENVEUR SMITH IN

FREDERICK DOUGLASS NOW!

As part of a day-long visit to Morgan State University by actor/writer/director, Roger Guenveur Smith, MSU's SWAN program hosts Mr. Smith performing  his genre-blending monologue, "Frederick Douglass Now!" This one-man play, conceived, written and performed by Smith, about one of America's greatest public intellectuals, combines spoken-word and sermon, hip-hop and historic quotes. The one-man play has been lauded by a number of publications, including Variety, The New York Times, and Playbill. .

Frederick Douglass is one of the most extraordinary figures in U.S. history: a self-liberated slave, orator, publisher, and pioneering feminist who pleaded the case for abolition before Abraham Lincoln and made plans with the President for moving freed enslaved Africans to the North during the Civil War. Douglass lived from 1818 to 1895.

Smith's one-man stage show begins with the actor rapping from his own text, mashing up references to slavery and contemporary life in the U.S. The performance then segues to Smith quoting extracts from Douglass' essays and letters, and returns to Smith's own writing for the finale, during which he sings: "If there is no struggle, there is no progress, Frederick Douglass is still alive."

Academy Award-winning writer/director, Spike Lee is set to direct a movie version of  "Frederick Douglass Now." This will be the 3rd of Smith's one-man shows adapted to film.
