spell #7, a choreopoem written for the stage by Ntozake Shange, the author of for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf, has friends who are actors, musicians, and performers to commiserate about the difficulties they face as Black artists having to "wear the mask" and deploy tactics such as "code switching" to be recognized, appreciated, or to fit in. Through dance, music and other forms of dramatic expression, the characters liberate themselves from the history of racism in theatre.
