Artist Profile
The Sankofa Bird has been adopted as a symbol of what Africana Studies strives to do. The word "Sankofa" can be translated to mean, "go back to the past and bring forward that which is useful." The bird is rendered as twisting its beak behind itself, in order to bring forth an egg from its back.

The Sankofa Bird has also been "adopted" as the mascot for the multi-media musical production that honors and examines the experiences of and acknowledges the presence of Africans in the Americas over the last 400 years. Performances and presentations will be in the artforms: - Dance - Spoken Word - Music Hosted by local shero, Ms. Maria Broom, and featuring an original music composition by acclaimed musician and composer, Benny Russell [MSU '81].
